Citizens Research Council of Michigan Honors Former Congressmen Dan Kildee and Fred Upton at 2026 Public Policy Dinner

Lansing, MI, October 5, 2026 – Former U.S. Representatives Dan Kildee and Fred Upton were honored last week with the prestigious Eugene A. Gargaro, Jr. Public Service Award by the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, recognizing their public service and commitment to civic engagement, with over 300 guests in attendance.

For over 110 years, the Citizens Research Council has delivered non-partisan analyses of state and local policy issues. Our work empowers elected officials and engaged citizens to participate in civil, informed policy discussions grounded in a shared understanding of essential facts and background that inform policy solutions.

The Annual Public Policy Dinner honors public servants across the state who exemplify excellence in public service, promote fact-based solutions, engage in civil dialogue despite ideological or party differences, and, first and foremost, put Michigan’s best interests at the center of their civic lives.

“We are so grateful for the ongoing support from DTE and the DTE Foundation as Keynote/Panel sponsors,” said Eric Lupher, president of the Citizens Research Council. “We also extend our deepest thanks to Gene and his late wife, Mary Anne Gargaro, for their Diamond-level sponsorship. These sponsorships elevate the kind of event we can offer to everyone. Many others also contributed as sponsors, making the dinner a smashing success.”

Lupher also thanked journalist Jordyn Hermani, reporter with Bridge Michigan, for moderating a thoroughly entertaining and illuminating conversation with the congressmen.

Previous recipients of the Gargaro Public Service Award include Paul Hillegonds; John Dingell, Jr.; Douglas Roberts, Sr.; Dennis Archer, Sr.; Kelly Rossman-McKinney; Dr. Ora Hirsch-Pescovitz; Dr. Kathleen Wilbur; Mark A. Murray; Rick Snyder; and Debbie Stabenow.
