Michigan’s population growth tracked the nation’s until the 1970s when Michigan’s growth began to lag. The state is now 49th out of 50 in population growth and has lost six U.S. House of Representatives seats.
Too many young people are leaving the state; by 2030 the working-age population will shrink by more than 150,000. At the same time, Michigan is a relatively old state that is getting older; by 2030, the retirement-age population will grow by more than 450,000 people. Michigan is also becoming more diverse, with all the state’s population growth coming from populations of color
