Event Purpose:
The Citizens Research Council of Michigan is partnering with Michigan Information & Research Service (MIRS) and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Foundation to offer lunch and a panel discussion about part-time legislatures.
Since the May announcement of a petition circulating effort for a citizen-initiated amendment to the Michigan Constitution, people inside and outside of government have been discussing what such a change could mean for Michigan. Our panel of experts will analyze potential effects of the proposal, consider Michigan’s history with part-time and full-time legislatures, look at the mood of the voters, and consider how the PT/FT nature of Michigan’s legislature compares to other states. Lunch will be served.
Speakers:
- Jordon Newton, Citizens Research Council Research Associate, will share insights about the Michigan proposed constitutional amendment and Michigan’s history of part-time and full-time legislatures.
- Dr. Peverill Squire, the Hicks and Martha Griffiths Chair in American Politics at the University of Missouri, will bring insights about how the practices of the Michigan legislature compare to other states. He is a political scientist well known for his work on legislative institutions with specific focus on state legislatures. He’s the author of State Legislatures Today and is best known for the Squire Index which ranks the levels of professionalization of state legislatures.
- Bernie Porn, President of EPIC/MRA, will show survey data about how Michigan residents feel about the part-time legislature proposal.
Format: A panel discussion with opportunity for question and answer.
