Notes:
The Sales Tax was a child of the Great Depression and the collapse of the Property Tax. Few states had sales taxes until the 1930s. By the end of the Depression, most states had them.
Legally, the Sales Tax is a tax on the privilege of selling at retail. This means that, while the buyer may actually pay the tax, the seller is liable for remitting the tax to the state.
