Legislative hearings in the appropriations subcommittees will begin shortly after the budget is presented. They typically do not involve members of the legislature who are not on the appropriations committees, but from time to time members will come to the hearings and make their views known relative to specific budgets and budget issues.

The auditor general is currently conducting audits for fiscal years 1997 and earlier. His staff is out in all the state departments and state universities performing financial and performance audits. And finally, state government is almost 4 months into the spending the fiscal year 1999 appropriations: executing the fiscal year 1999 budget.
